SR22 Basics

SR22 Filing, an introduction...

An SR22 is a form issued by an insurance company which removes a suspension order placed by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) on your driving privilege. The filing provides a guarantee to the California Department of Motor Vehicles that an insurance company has issued at least minimum liability coverage for the person making that filing and that the insurance company will notify the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) should the insurance ever lapse for any reason.

Filing an SR22 from another state

Depending on the insurance company you have, it may be possible for them to file with the State requiring this form although the form is not called an SR22 in all states. Check with your broker before purchasing your policy to verify the availability if you are required to show proof of insurance in a state other than California.

Reactivating a Drivers License

In addition to filing an SR22, you must purchase no less than the minimum liability coverage on the vehicle(s) you own. If you do not own a motor vehicle, you must purchase "non-owners" liability coverage. The price is based on the severity of your driving record (accidents and violations), where you live, and the number of years of driving experience.

Maintaining an SR22 Filing

Under normal circumstances the SR22 Filing period is three (3) years. However, with the advent of sticker enforcement by the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) laws, and lobbying against drunk drivers, the terms can be extended.
